Stop 6: Immersive Path - Ecological Sanctuary

Transcript

This is Stop 6 on the Biodiversity Walk – Immersive Path – Ecological Sanctuary. We are now at the Rhododendron Walk, and in particular, the new immersive path. This raised wooden boardwalk allows us to step into the heart of a very delicate ecosystem without disturbing the natural watercourse beneath it. At the core of this area is rewilding. We allow plants to grow, self-seed, and spread naturally. For example, wild garlic and early primrose thrive here and are fantastic for early pollinators. As these go over, other plants like mare’s tail take over, creating valuable habitats for insects and small animals in this delicate ecosystem. The rhododendrons are the main highlight here, flowering from early spring into early summer with bursts of colour and scent. This path lets you get close enough to see, smell, and even touch the flowers. At other times of the year, the trees and shrubs interplanted with the rhododendrons provide structure, colour, and interest through autumn and winter. This part of the gardens is very low maintenance and shows how effective it can be to simply work with nature. The same idea can be recreated on a small or large scale in your own garden by allowing habitats to establish and flourish. This is one of the quietest areas on the Estate. Here you can switch off and listen to the birds in the trees, or the rustle of small mammals in the undergrowth. Being immersed in this calm space allows you to be present, feel relaxed, and connect with nature in a way that’s good for your wellbeing.

Stop 7: Japanese Garden - Water & Wellbeing

Transcript

This is Stop 7 on the Biodiversity Walk – Japanese Garden – Water & Wellbeing. We are now in the heart of the Japanese Garden, one of the most peaceful places on the Estate. This part of the garden sits at one of the lowest points, which means its naturally damp. In fact, it was built on a reclaimed bogland. That constant moisture helps the plants here tolerate drought, so less watering is needed. From a biodiversity point of view, water is vital. The pond and flowing streams here create habitats where mammals, insects, birds, and invertebrates can all thrive. Each part of the water system supports different forms of life, adding to the richness of biodiversity in this area. The Japanese Garden is at its best in spring and autumn. In spring, you’ll see azaleas, rhododendrons, and flowering cherries. In summer, the focus shifts to structure, with shrubs and evergreens creating a calming natural sanctuary. Then in autumn, the garden truly comes alive with the brilliant colours of the Japanese maples. Water habitats are among the richest areas for biodiversity. And they can be recreated on a small scale – even with a garden pond or a simple water feature. The Japanese Garden is a calming space, and water plays a key role in that. Natural water sources release negative ions, which have been shown to improve mood, support sleep, and strengthen the immune system. Standing here, surrounded by water, plants, and wildlife, allows you to slow down and connect with nature in a way that’s good for your wellbeing.

Stop 9: Italian Garden - Biodiversity for Formal Gardens

Transcript

This is Stop 9 on the Biodiversity Walk – Italian Garden – Biodiversity for formal Gardens. We are now in the Italian Garden – the most formal part of the gardens. This is one of the hardest areas to introduce biodiversity practices, but progress is being made. Traditionally, the lawns here are formal, and the grass is cut short. In recent years, we’ve raised the cutting height of the grass. This allows daisies to flower and be pollinated, while also reducing stress on the lawns during drought. As a result, we use less water here. Another feature of this garden is the topiary. Here, Prunus lusitanica and Taxus baccata are clipped into balls and pyramids, maintained through regular pruning. To make this more sustainable, we’ve moved from two-stroke engines to battery-powered tools, reducing both noise and operator strain. We’ve also introduced robotic mowers to manage the banks, adding to the peace and tranquillity of this formal space. Bringing biodiversity and sustainable practices into such a structured area is quite challenging, but it’s also very rewarding. Even small changes, like those we’ve made here in the Italian Garden, can have a significant impact. Here, the symmetry and order of the formal garden sit against the backdrop of the Sugarloaf Mountain. The balance between the man-made and the natural creates a striking beauty, with a calming and positive effect on all who pause to take in the view. Thank you for joining us on the Biodiversity Walk. I hope you enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed creating it. To learn more about our biodiversity charter and sustainable practices, visit powerscourt.com. For details on the plants mentioned today, call into the Powerscourt Garden Pavilion.
