Explore the Walled Garden
The walled gardens are one of the oldest parts of the Gardens and feature fascinating plants along Ireland’s largest double sided The Walled Gardens were once known as ‘The Kitchen Garden’ as vegetables and fruit used to be grown here to keep the family kitchen well stocked. Today, you will still spot some tasty apples that ripen to perfection during the autumn.
The original selection of plants and shrubs along the herbaceous border were chosen by Lady Powerscourt, the wife of the 7th Viscount. Her husband Lord Powerscourt once said, “The planting of the choice plants and shrubs, and seeing them increase year by year in size and beauty has been one of the greatest pleasures of my life.”
The 240-year-old Bamberg Gate came from the Cathedral at Bamberg in Germany, purchased by the 7th Viscount from Mr. Pratt, a curiosity dealer in London. Its intricate ironwork and interesting perspective make it the perfect spot to enjoy the vibrant colours and beautiful scents of the Rose Garden.
Take a quiet moment and relax beside the small fountain in the centre of the garden. This fountain was collected by Lord Powerscourt in London, and he considered a fountain of its quality “difficult to find” and thus a prized possession.
In the Walled Garden you will also find ‘Julia’s Memorial’, a calm reflective pond built in honour of the 7th Viscountess by her son. Her husband Mervyn, the 7th Viscount also named the bust of a lady at the front of the house “Empress Julia”.
