AT POWERSCOURT ESTATE

A unique and fascinating part of the Gardens is the Pet Cemetery which is the resting place of the much- loved pets of the Wingfield and Slazenger families. It is situated in a quiet part of the gardens where you can enjoy the striking colours of azaleas, rhododendrons and roses in May and June. The cemetery is believed to be the largest pets’ cemetery in any private Irish garden.

Children will love reading the names and learning about the animals buried in the cemetery, some over half a century ago. The families had a wide variety of pets including children’s ponies, ‘Tommy’ and his wife ‘Magic’ as well as ‘Swift’ and ‘Bully.’ Another favourite pet included ‘Eugenie’ the Jersey cow who had 17 calves and produced over 100,000 gallons of milk! The names of the pets are a joy to read, such as ‘Mrs Mare’, ‘Little Bots’ and ‘Doodles Chow’. You may get some interesting and amusing ideas when naming your next pet!

WHAT OUR VISITORS SAY

This place is amazing. Soo beautiful. We’ve been many times and each time we love it. We chose to come in May but maybe next time we’ll head over in June hopefully to see all the flowers blooming. The walks are soo relaxing and the view is just amazing. This time we stayed for lunch and cannot praise enough their food. Such fresh and tasty soup and sandwiches and yummy desserts. Cannot wait for our next visit as even if it’s far away from where we live and takes almost 3 hours to drive, it’s just soo beautiful ?
