For over 20 years the house largely remained a ruin, although Ralph and Gwen courageously refurbished part of it where they lived for a number of years.
Gwen and Ralph’s son, Dr Michael Slazenger was a medical doctor. In 1990 he took a year-long break from his career to consider what to do.
It was his vision to transform Powerscourt into a sustainable business to ensure its long term survival.
In 1996 the house was re-built as you see it now.
Powerscourt House today is home to the best of Irish design in gifts, clothes and furniture. The Avoca Terrace Café offers the finest Irish artisan, freshly prepared food. Powerscourt House was voted as One of the Top Ten Houses and Mansions Worldwide by the Lonely Planet Guide. It is wonderful to see Powerscourt House thriving today as one of the most popular tourist destinations in Ireland.
Sarah Slazenger daughter of Dr Michael Slazenger now runs the Estate today.
Her cousin Alex Slazenger is the Head Gardener.
