Meet our Gardeners
We have an amazing team of gardeners here at Powerscourt, led by our Head Gardener, Alex Slazenger. Alex regularly hosts guided gardening walks and talks at Powerscourt so you can meet him and see the wonderful work that his team does to keep the gardens looking pristine year-round.
Hello from our Head Gardener
As a child growing up at Powerscourt, I had a wonderful time exploring one of the most magical and exciting gardens in the world! From the breath-taking vistas of the Sugar Loaf, the Pepper Pot Tower and its cannons, to rolling down the terraces of the formal gardens, I had an idyllic childhood immersed in the natural world.
I completely understood the 7th Viscount’s excitement on the day he got out of school (that sounded good then as well!) to lay the foundation stone on the top terrace and I daydreamed that I too would go on to travel the globe collecting rare plants and magnificent statues.
Soon my playground became my passion and life’s purpose and I have devoted the past ten years to arming myself with the necessary academic qualifications and specialist experience required to become Head Gardener at Powerscourt.
When Powerscourt was awarded third best garden in the world by the prestigious National Geographic Magazine it was wonderful to see the efforts of several Viscounts and their dedicated staff appreciated and recognised. I and the other gardeners, Dermot, Derek, Ken, Shane and Fergus, feel very privileged to manage and further develop these world class gardens for future generations of visitors to enjoy.
We also work closely with Claire and the Garden Pavilion team to provide visitors with opportunities to take inspiration from Powerscourt for their own gardens. We look forward to welcoming you to Powerscourt and thank you for your support which greatly assists us in our work.
